MAC Surf Baby Lipstick and Lipglass Review

In the Surf Baby collection, MAC have released four shades - Bust Out! (dirty violet - lustre), Hibiscus (orange coral - cremesheen), Mocha (peachy brown - satin, Permanent) and Naturally Eccentric (creamy white nude - lustre). I purchased Bust Out! and Hibiscus - I actually bought two of Hibiscus because I loved the colour so much, I am waiting for the second one to be delivered.

L-R: Bust Out!, Hibiscus

Bust Out! is nice and creamy and can be applied semi sheer to semi opaque by building the colour up with a second swipe. It isn't a bright purple on my lips as shown in the tube but it is more blue based than recent purple lipsticks released such as Style Curve and Playtime, comparison swatches are at the end. Being a lustre it gives a glossy look to lips.

Hibiscus is a beautiful shade of orange coral, very very creamy and easy to apply evenly. It is verging on opaque in one swipe. It is a great colour for Summer without being too bright such as a true orange so if you are afraid to wear orange really bright, you could consider this instead. It is quite warm toned but I think it could still work on cooler skintones and I think it would look really nice on fair skin with the contrast. I have seen cool toned fair skinned women wearing oranges and they still look great so if you like the colour, go test it out to see.

In this release are four lipglasses too. Girl On Board (pale white gold), Good Lovin (soft peachy pink), Krazy Kahuna (terracotta), Strange Potion (soft coral pink). All of these colour seem as they could be paired well over the lipsticks - maybe not the terracotta over the violet but I could be wrong. I bought Strange Potion which I originally bought from the Venomous Villains collection last year. It is my favourite lipgloss so I decided to get a backup.

Strange Potion
Strange Potion is a gorgeous colour and very versatile. I mostly wear it alone as it looks great in it's own right but it also works well over coral lipsticks and pale pinks. It has subtle pink shimmer in it and is well pigmented. It also makes my lips look fuller. Being a lipglass, it is quite sticky but because of this, they do wear well.

  3. Anonymous: Yeah it is annoying how different screens show things differently and then different lighting can effect swatches too. Hibiscus is on the red side - it is an orangey coral but I wouldn't say it was red at all.

xasperadastra: Bust Out and Spitfire are similar but I think Bust Out is darker, Spitfire is more magenta on me. I have swatches of me wearing Spitfire here:

It is actually a tad more purple in real life but I always find it difficult to capture purple on camera.

  4. Thanks for the comparison swatches. This was very helpful! I was thinking about Spitfire but Bust Out does look a bit darker, more purple compared to Spitfire. I was going to skip Hibiscus because of Toxic Tale but your photos made them seen different enough to purchase. Thank you!

  5. Kristie: Toxic Tale is also a completely different finish as it is a Satin compared to Hibiscus which is a cremesheen and looks much more glossier on lips. Toxic Tale sort of looks like a neon red on my lips.

  7. Rachy: It is a great colour, I think it would look so nice on you because you do like your bright lip colours. I've seen you wearing orange and coral and they worked well on your fair skin so I can't see any reason why this wouldn't work x
